4chan Better Filter

Hides the images, videos and GIFs you blacklist on 4chan threads, board indexes and the catalog: the exact file (MD5), the same picture resized or recompressed, and edited copies; videos and GIFs by their thumbnail. Manual references only, reversible stubs, categories with their own settings. Vanilla 4chan, 4chan X, XT, XZ, neXT, StyleChan and OneeChan.

4chan Better Filter

Hide the images, videos and GIFs you don't want to see on 4chan. Blacklist a picture once, and its reposts and edited copies can be hidden too.

How it works

  • Click ⊘ blacklist next to a post's file. Later posts with the same file, or the same picture (resized, recompressed or edited), are hidden behind a small stub.
  • The stub says why the post was hidden. Reveal it, mark it as a false positive, or remove the reference, in one click.
  • Everything runs in your browser, with the checking done in the background so long threads stay smooth.

What it catches

  • The exact file, recognised before anything is downloaded.
  • The same picture, resized or recompressed.
  • Edited copies: cropped, mirrored, recoloured or otherwise altered versions of a blacklisted picture.
  • Videos and GIFs, by their exact file and by their thumbnail.
  • Optional: close variants, pictures that are only very similar.

Organise your list

  • Categories, each with its own settings if you like: how strict the matching is, which checks it uses, whether its posts get a stub, whether replies to them are hidden.
  • Tags, board restrictions and search.
  • Export and import, to back up your list or share it. Exports are minimal by default, and an import never widens where your existing filters apply.
  • MD5-only references (from a 4chan X filter, say) get their picture so they catch reposts and edited copies too: from the next post they hide, or, if you ask, from a 4chan archive (this connects to the archive you choose and takes a while for a long list).
  • A false positives list for pictures you never want hidden.

Works with

  • Vanilla 4chan (desktop and phone layouts), 4chan X, XT, XZ and neXT, OneeChan and StyleChan.
  • Tested with Violentmonkey and Tampermonkey in Firefox and Chrome, and with Greasemonkey 4. Also supports other managers that only have the newer GM.* functions (Userscripts, FireMonkey).
  • Firefox and Chromium-based browsers.
  • Its windows take their colours from your 4chan style or theme, or use the built-in Dark or Light.

Settings: the ⊘ icon in 4chan X/XT's header, [Media filter] at the top right on vanilla 4chan, or Filter in the phone layout's links.

Privacy

  • No tracking, no analytics, no remote code.
  • It only downloads 4chan's own thumbnails (to compare pictures) and, when you open its settings, the public archive list from 4chenz (at most once a week; you can turn this off).
  • Only when you start an archive lookup does it contact that archive: it searches for your references' MD5s and downloads the thumbnails it finds. The archive sees your IP address and which files you look up.
  • Your list and settings stay in your browser and leave it only when you export them. No diagnostics are stored unless you turn that on; the default diagnostics export is anonymised.
