Seem to have found the issue with a friend familiar with the site's coding, he says that Gelbooru's paginator does not supply a next page button for fewer than 7 pages, so you will need to check for a next page by instead cecking the current page (pid / 42 +1) vs the highest number in the paginator

No longer paginates on Gelbooru
At least on this url http://gelbooru.com/index.php?page=post&s=list&tags=kanden_suki it no longer works, will dig around a little for other examples.
