4chan Better Filter

Hides the images, videos and GIFs you blacklist on 4chan threads, board indexes and the catalog: the exact file (MD5), the same picture resized or recompressed, and edited copies; videos and GIFs by their thumbnail. Manual references only, reversible stubs, categories with their own settings. Vanilla 4chan, 4chan X, XT, XZ, neXT, StyleChan and OneeChan.

  • v1.3.0 2026-10-31

    1.3.0

    • Checking now runs in the background, so long threads stay smooth.
    • The References tab remembers its sort order.
    • Reliability fixes, and fixes for older Firefox versions.
  • v1.2.0 2026-10-31

    1.2.0

    • Better detection of edited copies of the pictures you blacklist.
    • Your existing references work as they are: nothing to re-add or re-import.
    • Some of the new checks prepare themselves in the background when a page loads, so pages don't freeze.
  • v1.1.0 2026-10-30

    1.1.0

New: exact-file references can now catch reposts and edited copies

References that only have a file's MD5 (for example, imported from a 4chan X filter) used to match that one file. They can now get the picture too, in three ways:

    • Automatically: when one hides a post, that post's thumbnail is added to it. You can turn this off in Settings → Detection.
    • From an archive: use References → Look up in archive… for the selected references, or for those shown. Choose the board and the archive, and whether to add pieces (for heavily cropped copies).
    • After an import: if an import adds MD5-only references, you're offered the archive lookup.

An archive lookup only runs when you start it. It connects to the archive you choose. It searches one file every 3 seconds, so a long list takes a while. You can stop it at any time, and anything already found is kept.

    Fixes

    • 4chan X: the settings icon was very large, with "Media filter" written next to it. It now matches 4chan X's own icons.
    • 4chan X with Greasemonkey: the settings icon could be missing, because it was placed before 4chan X had built its header. It now moves into the header when the header appears. If it can't be shown anywhere, a small floating button appears instead.
    • Older Firefox versions: a style rule was being ignored, and now works.
